2002 Escape single din stereo + old tablet front end

$20 Bluetooth stereo + old tablet I had laying around. The tablet hooks up to the stereo via Bluetooth and provides music, movies and Google maps navigation. After 5 minutes it dims the screen completely and "wakes up" with 2 taps. The tablet is mounted to the dash very securely via Velcro-like picture mounting strips.

Interesting setup. I use my current phone (I used to have a larger one, about the size of that "tablet") and for the interface I use Android Auto and the phone in a cradle stuck in the CD slot.

Does the tablet have cellular data, or do you hot spot with your phone, or no active internet connection?

My stock head unit, which is 99.9999% used just for SYNC connection to my cell phone, is starting to bug me. I would only replace it with a unit that does Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. I would hate to lose steering wheel controls going with a cheap setup instead of a name brand that supports the wheel controls.

Its a standalone unit with Google offline maps, it works surprisingly well and smoothly . it can hotspot with my phone when I really need to but don't most of the time.

The UI on the tablet matches well with the head unit.

Once I stopped using my own music (thumb drives or burned mp3 cds) and starting streaming, there was no looking back.

While I do keep a 32 gig thumb drive of music for those 5 minute lulls of not having internet access, I rarely use it. I also do download the maps for areas I will be driving. Oddly enough I got them for Mexico and I had better internet access through my US cell provider and roaming that I did on the US side.

Thinking of getting OEM nav for 2010 escape. Any thought or issues I need to know. What OEM navs will fit.

thanks for the info. now i know what to look for. I have a limited escape that is wrecked that i can get parts from. just havent figured out what sterio i want to use. have a crappy double din right now.
