Oil pressure question-

Postby Drducttape - January 21st, 2020, 1:01 am

2006 Escape V6, flickering oil light.

We pulled the switch and hooked up an analog gauge. Thankfully, we have pressure. But it is the amount of pressure that concerns me. On cold startup the gauge spikes to 100psi, then slowly drops to about 95 after a minute of idling.

What kind of pressure should I be seeing at this sampling point in the oil system?

Is the pressure switch before, or after the oil filter?

With only 2000 miles into this oil change interval, could a clogged filter be causing the pressure to be so high?

Thanks in advance!

Just installed a new oil pump and have the same readings. On cold start up I'm reading 100 psi at idle and around 30 psi at idle when the engine is warm.
Does anybody know if the cold pressure is normally that high?

FYI for anyone interested:
Contacted the oil pump manufacturer and was given the following info:
Model: Melling M211
Bypass Relief Setting: ~60 psi
Manufacturer Test Data: With Bypass Enabled, Maximum Pressure = 71 psi. With Pump Dead Headed, Maximum Pressure = 105 psi

New pump installed has a faulty bypass circuit (stuck closed)
