Savo ham build

Postby thesavo - June 27th, 2020, 11:42 am

In my 2008 mariner, I have a 20 year old radio shack Mobile radio. It's plugged into to the rear console aux power. I have a mag base antenna running through the rear passenger door. Static squelch on this radio is terrible. Not sure if it is power or antenna related. I do plan to use eventually move to a tyt-9800. I am planning to do the following upgrades.

Run power lines through the firewall and connect to the battery and chassis ground. I will terminate with anderson polepoles.

Antenna is going to get drilled for an NMO. As the Tyt-9800 will run on 6 meter, 2 meter, 70 centimeter, finding an appropriate triband antenna will be changing and possibly done later.

I will check for ground bonding issues and post any changes made to reduce RFI. I'll place some ferrite beads on the power and antenna leads.

Right now the radio is sitting under the center stack, forward of the shifter. I'll mount it to the trapezoid cut out on the passenger side of the console. Also need to find a good place to mount the microphone holder.
