'08 Headlight Switches are Different...?

Postby Captain Chris - December 7th, 2020, 12:57 pm

I have been driving an '08 Mariner for about two years.
I replaced tie rod ends, and control arms, and front tires, of course, and so far, it's been meeting my needs pretty well, but just rolled over 260 k, so I found a back-up '08 Mariner, with only 184K, and a lot better documentation...

Picked it up Saturday, and noticed that it had a different headlight switch, with one less position.
My 1st one is the Base FWD 3.0 V6; second one is AWD 3.0 V6...

Anyone have any insights on this?

There are variations, depending on what options you have or what model Base or Premier (since amenities package is only available on Premier, and the only package I see with autolamp).

The standard one has Off, Park, and Headlights (but I don't think this is possible with the Mariner, Base and Premier have standard fog lights)
Then there is Autolamp (a bulb with an A in it)
Then there is one if you have fog lights (I think the standard one for Base)
Then there is one of you have fog and autolamp

Hmmm, my 'Base' Model has the 'Auto-Sense' mode, but the 4WD does not...?
They both have fog lights...

I guess you'd need a sensor to make the 'Auto-mode' switch function...
But I sort of like running bright all the time. Can't do that with the Auto-Mode Switch...

(No more Mercury site, and FOMOCO site only seems to have basic recall info'. on Merc's, so)
I researched at cars.com, which indicates that the "Amenities Package WAS available on the Base Mariner, and Auto-lamp feature is included in the "Amenities Package", which I seem to have on my FWD, as it also has the overhead stowage console...it also has the "Moon & Tune" package: Moon Roof & CD changer, but I have fabric seats, and the rims are a standard Mariner design 16"...etc; same rims on the AWD (which was part of the reason I bought it: I swapped out the 2 good tires from the rear of the AWD, and put them on #1 for the winter. When I get front end parts replaced on the AWD, and get alignment done, then it will be worth getting a matching set of tires for it.

So, after all that, I guess real question is: what else does it take (besides the switch) for the Auto-lamp feature, and how big of a hassle to put that stuff in there, now*?

* on top of the hassle of getting it! :worry:

If anyone knows...
Thank you!

You are correct, the "Amenities Package" was standard on Premier, and an available optional package on Base (I stopped at the filled in dot for that package and didn't also see that it was optional later). The overhead console have 2 storage bins? It also has auto dimming rear view mirror, compass, outside temperature reading along with autolamp.

Do you have automatic AC or manual controls? It either needs the auto AC which has the combo autolamp/sunload sensor, or manual controls and just the autolamp sensor. I am guessing that the SJB would also need programmed or you would need one from a vehicle that has it. I don't know if it is something that can be done in Forscan or not, or needs to be.

Thanks for reply.

I think both my vehicles have the manual AC; no digital display...
Man, stuff is all interconnected on this...

sorry, what does 'SJB ' stand for here?

Auto lamps need only a compliant switch with autoloamp setting. You should have a photo sensor for the auto panel dimmer in the windshield vent
I added autoloamp to mariner base 2008 by changing the switch.

SJB Is smart junction box. It's a fuse panel with integrated circuits and relays.
It's a combo unit now, but it used to a CJB - central junction box (fuse panel) and a GEM - generic electronics module. Why they got merged into one unit, it became SJB. Later vehicles call it a body control module. SJB controls most non engine functions.

Now be careful. I have mangled clips on two switches in the salvage yard. You have to release it from behind. Remove the access door from the side of the dash. You'll see it when you open the drivers door.
There is a clip at 9 and 3 o'clock position. You may have to use a small slotted screw driver to release. I'll look for an old one to give pictures.
