01-04 Escape recall for rust belt states 14S02 RECALL

Postby expressonate - April 4th, 2014, 1:31 am

Hello all, just found out about a new recall posted today (4/3/2014) for 01-04 Escapes.
If your car is originally sold in, or currently registered in a rust belt state, you need to setup an appointment for the ft control arm mounts to be inspected. If yours pass the inspection, it's fine to drive till parts come out sometime in June or so. If it doesn't pass, you will be put into a rental car at no charge to you except for fuel, until parts are available.

Contact your dealership to setup an appointment for the inspection, but the replacement parts are not out yet for the fix. If your vehicle is not safe for the road, you'll be put into a rental asap (the dealership may not have one at the time). The inspection is supposed to take around an hour or two total time, but your dealership may need more time based on scheduling.

I have the dealership letter in front of me, but dont have a way to scan it other then by taking pictures of each of the 6 pages.

Take care, and happy motoring all!
~Nate

My parents' 2001 had both front control arms replaced ages ago due to rust. Is that what this recall is for?

Not sure, looks like it's where the control arms mount is the issue, not the arms themselves. However, like most recalls, if you paid for the work before it was announced as a recall, they usually reimburse you if you have the recite still. I suggest calling ford customer service and seeing what all gets replaced. It's NOT in the letter that I have. It looks like the front subframe is getting replaced on vehicles that require it, due to corrosion.

+1

Thanks for posting this Nate :thumb:

Here is a link posted by Escape94, in a different thread, to an NBC News article on the recall:

**EDIT** The linked article has quite a few issues. Mainly, it states it's for 2001-2004 hybrids. There were no hybrids in those model years. The recall is for certain non-hybrids made those years.

The article has some serious factual problems. I don't think 386,000 Escape Hybrids were ever built. I think it was around 120,000. Second, the recall is mostly for 2001-2004 Hybrids, but the Hybrid came out in 2005.
2009 Escape Hybrid Limited AWD, Black, bought Jan.2013
- replaced ambient temperature sensor
- replaced two hvac blend door acutators

- replaced underbody a/c lines to rear hvac
- replaced backup sensor
- replaced sway bar links
- replaced one outer tie rod (105,000 miles)
- replaced right front wheel bearing
- replaced ball joints
- another brake job
- replaced a/c condenser
- replaced tailgate latch
- replaced tailgate support struts
- replaced underbody a/c lines to rear hvac (2nd time, $2000 each time)

Hi everyone,

If you'd like, shoot me a PM with your VIN and I'll check to see if your Escape is affected by this recall.

I know you are right on your second point but I'm not sure about the 1st one... Anyway, the recall is not for hybrids according to this Oasis Broadcast:
