Full size spare tire

Postby Rime of AM - February 17th, 2020, 12:57 am

Has anyone tried to install a full size 17" wheel/tire in the factory spare tire location?

I have read that some second gen. Escapes had an option for a full size spare. I have a donut myself and would like to add a full size spare. My stock wheels are 16 inches though.

Second Gen is '08 to '12 right?

When I have some time to spare I will test mine.

Correct, I'd be eager to find out. The donut spare under my 2010 looks like its never been used, might need replaced. I'd rather replace it with a full size spare on a steel wheel than buy a new donut spare.

The old donut tire on mine was never used, and it had already had a tire dry rot (it is a 12 year old car). I have to buy a new donut tire which is quite expensive.

I have an 09 escape, replaced the donut with a full size spare in the factory location no problem

Cool, Thank you. 17 inch? If so, when the yards reopen I will look for a wheel.

That's great, any pictures? How low was it compared to the compact spare? Did you have to deflate it quite a bit?

Thanks.

Following. Was wondering about the same scenario.
As we know for sure that there WAS an option for both 16" and 17" spares from factory, I would think that it will fit without any deflating... But not 100% sure. Finding the factory 17" spare WITH tire seems to be tricky. Wonder if getting a 17" generic wheel (with same bolt pattern)/tire combo from tirerack etc is an option. But then we have to make sure that it's middle "hole" is small enough to work with the factory butterfly.

(But before all this I need to get my factory spare hoist thing working. The hole in bumper looks full with rust and I am not very hopeful that the rest of it works either.... Going to try it sometime this week, armed with hammer, screwdriver, PB blaster and WD 40 etc .....)
