Aftermarket, special model, or hand polished OEM?

Postby bangster - November 18th, 2019, 5:25 pm

I like the 17 inch split sparkle silver wheels on my 2017 Escape in Magnetic Metallic and don't think that shiny polished or or chromed wheels would look good on it, and if I replaced the wheels it would be with 18s or 19s.

But in my weekly search of craigslist came across some wheels I have never seen in this finish. Anyone ever see these?

Same as my 2017 (and new for 2017, previous ones didn't have an open "window" in the spokes) but either polished or chromed:

On my 2011, I went with aftermarket Enkie;
17" wheels with Cooper AT3 all terrain tires. Very quiet too.

Ran these year-round for almost 2 years.

My Edge ST came with Pirelli P-zero summer tires,

and they are useless in 1" of snow.
No traction or steering whatsoever, so I bought an aftermarket
set of tires/wheels (1" smaller wheel, 10 aspect ratio taller winter/ice tire:

Bring on the snow.

Pirelli on the left, Yokohama IceGuard studless winter tire on the right.

The winter tires are noisier than the Cooper AT3s I had on the Escape.
Kind of surprised how quiet the Coopers are compared to the Yokohamas.

Those Craig's List wheels would appear to be your wheels with "Wheel Skins" installed. I could not find your wheel in chrome (technically 'Chrome Like Alloy' to use Ford's terminology') available on any Escape, Mkc or Edge recently. So I am betting these are the aftermarket covers. The name brand is "Wheel Skins (or Skinz)" and they make plastic Chrome covers that fit right on top of the Original wheel. Pretty cool idea actually. I have seen several second generation Escapes with the 16 inch wheel that have the Skins on them to make them chrome. That's my guess anyhow.

Yes, thank you, it looks like those skins! I have seen them OEM on some F150s and the older Escapes, but not seen them in this wheel. But looking at the image of them, the one that is flat, it looks like there is a double lip.
