2013-2017 4WD general function question

Postby jaywish - October 12th, 2019, 7:25 pm

A friend just bought a 2013 SEL with the larger turbo motor. It has a 4WD emblem on the back.

I this true 4WD as opposed to AWD? By that I am asking are the axles locked right to left with a true locking system or a clutch based locking system or is it an open diff system and they just put a 4WD emblem on the hatch?

I think it is more like AWD than 4WD, not sure why they call it 4WD. I don't think it is any different than your 2012 that they also call 4WD in the Owners Manual.

I am pretty sure it has a PTU that continuously transmits power to a rear clutch setup that as needed transfers power to the rear. I don't think front or rear have a locker.

I have data logged my 2012 Fusion AWD to see when and how much rear is commanded, and with my driving style, nearly every take off AWD is commanded and only once coasting is it FWD only.

I agree with Bangster. I believe it is more AWD as opposed to "real" 4WD. Both of my Escapes that I owned from this generation have been FWD.

Maybe the up to 2004 with the knob to go between auto and on would be what you consider 4x4/4wd. To me it just locks the clutch in the rear for offroad severe conditions.

I consider my 82 F150 a 4x4. Locking hubs, 2 speed transfer case, locker in the rear. Auto locking hubs? Try backing up in 4x4 and they unlock. I guess the Control-Trac system like in our 2000 Expedition with AWD, 4H and 4L is also 4x4/4WD.

If I really lived where 4WD/AWD was needed, I would be able to try out AWD in these situations, I don't. While I did drive a little in snow with 4x4, mainly it was RWD with a front heavy car.
