2016 Escape tires

I have a 2016 Ford Escape se and I need a set of winter tires for it but the problem the tires that are on it are 235/55/r17 and that’s what belongs on it but I can’t get a really rough set of tires for it in that size but I can find a set I like in 235/70/r17 but I don’t know if they will fit. So I was just curious if anyone knows if they will fit or not or what is the biggest size tires I can fit on it?

235/70/17 is basically 3 inches taller, so do you have 1.5 inches of clearance all around the tires when sitting and suspension is collapsed and/or the front tires are turned to full lock? Eyeballing my 2017 I think it would rub in the front on the wheel wells and fenders with the steering wheel turned.

I am not sure I would go that extreme even just for winter tires.

Would you happen know of any tires that are rougher tread that come in 235/55/17 or even smaller?

A lot of the time you can find a smaller tire with a similar diameter to your existing tire.

The smaller tire may allow steel wheels to be used to mount them.

I am not sure that 16 inch steel wheels will fit. TireRack seems to think so, as they have -1 configurations down to a 16 inch wheel.

There is 225/60/17 which is .4 inches larger diameter but narrower, which is really what you want in a dedicated snow tire.

225/60/17 is 27.6 inches tall (.4 more than OEM)
235/55/17 is 27.2 inches tall (OEM)
235/70/17 is 30.0 inches tall (2.8 more than OEM)

If also going with dedicated rims, and you can confirm that 16 inch wheels fit
225/65/16 is 27.5 inches tall (.3 more than OEM)
235/60/16 is 27.1 inches tall (.1 less than OEM)


I am putting together 16 inch wheels and tires for my daughters Fusion (not as tall overall as the Escape tire) because of the price of 18 inch snow tires, plus taller sidewall for the hidden pot holes or help us all curb hopping.

The main reason I brought this up is when I had my F150 with 20 inch tires, I purchased a set of winter tires and wheels (20 inch) that cost me a bundle. If I had paid more attention, I could have purchased a smaller tire on steel rims that would have been MUCH less expensive.
