2014 Key Fob

My wife has a 2014 Escape with the 5 button remote. She misplaced the one she normally uses. I think no problem and retrieve the spare from my safe. This one is dead. Probably hasn't been used in two or three years. I replaced the dead battery with a new one. Still nothing. The local dealer tells me they need a working remote in order to program a new one. So I need to buy 2 new remotes at $500.00 each. Is there some way around spending $1k to get her back on the road? Thanks

So it is probably a Titanium with Intelligent Access? Can you use the key inside to open the door? Have you tried holding the key up to the steering column then pressing the start button to start it?

I don't know if a locksmith will have much luck if it is the IA/push button start. I also don't know if Forscan can be used to do this on your own.

Mine have the IKT and need the key to start and they are pretty easy to do.

Aftermarket IA/smart fobs can be gotten for around $30. But it would still probably require at least a locksmith to program it (and hopefully not just clone it) if you can use the dead one as the second one. Odd that a new battery didn't bring it back to life. But it shouldn't need a battery when held against the steering column I assume that it energizes the RFID chip with it there.

bangster, thanks for the information. Update. The battery I used to replace the dead one was one I borrowed from a working flashlight. Curious as to why the fob would be dead with a "good" battery I purchased a new battery. Lo and behold it works fine.

Now my issue is where is the best place to buy a replacement fob for the lost one.

Glad you at least have the one working, I would not feel comfortable with only 1 key either.

There are cheap aftermarket ones online (most under $30), there are also used OEM ones with an uncut emergency key available for around $80.

Depending on what you think might have happened with the misplaced one, going to a dealer to have them remove the lost key and add the new key might not be the most financially cheapest way but might be the most secure way (instead of just adding on a new one).

I called around to get a key cut and out of curiosity I asked about programming, and often times they charged more than a dealer would.

The Fob was finally found. The wife somehow dropped it in the freezer as she was putting away groceries. After a month + in sub freezing temperatures the battery was still good!

Best possible outcome, glad it was found and wasn't out wandering around waiting for someone to find the vehicle it unlocked.
