Chrome peeling from wheels.

Postby Rime of AM - April 10th, 2019, 3:27 pm

I have taken my LTD to a particular car wash about 3 times a month for the past 3 or 4 months.
After the last wash I noticed the chrome peeling from the wheels near the hubs.

Is this a normal part of aging or is this place killing my chrome?

Do you live in the rust belt, get a lot of corrosion? That is one place, the lugs, that it can get under the chrome finish and cause it to the chrome to flake off.

I wouldn't call it the Rustbelt, Central PA.
Car is washed as soon as the roads dry after percipitation in the winter.
I am just wondering if the carwash is too aggressive or if this is normal aging.
The Chrome wheels make the Black car POP.
Need to cancel sub to carwash by 3rd week of month if I do not want to continue it.
Summer Mustang Bullitts are going on soon & I don't want them to be damaged if it truly is the carwash.

I am of the opinion that the car wash is too aggressive. Specifically, the pressure of the water.

The chrome wheels on the Escape are actually chrome clad. The wheels themselves are not chromed. Rather, a plastic type wheel cover is adhered to the wheels. That plastic is chromed. From what I have read, I feel this is actually a better and much more durable way that the steel or aluminum wheels being chromed. Chrysler has discovered the same thing.

The plastic doesn't really corrode. In contrast, Cragar brand wheels and even my genuine Ford chrome ponies that I had bought brand new for my now long gone Mustang = are prone to the chrome peeling off. Seems no matter how hard they tried, Chrome adhesion has been a problem and it is made worse if just an imperceptible amount of oxidized steel is chromed over. The same can be seen on Chrome bumpers.

One of my co-workers had mentioned to me that a good sized chip of his chrome clad wheel covers had flaked after he got to close to the wheel with his pressure washer. Another thing I have seen is the chrome being damaged by lug nut sockets on an impact wrench contacting the lug not hole and starting the process of the chrome chipping off.

Wow, you learn something new every day. I have only seen these on F-150s, never dealt with them before, I see lots of crappy looking ones on other brands.
