99 VW Jetta GLX project car

Well here's my first true project car, one I actually plan on keeping. It's a silver Volkswagen Jetta GLX, last of the Mk. III Jettas in top-of-the-line GLX trim with a VR6 engine and 5 speed transmission. For being 10 years old and fairly neglected by its previous owner, it's in pretty good shape on the outside. Only two small spots of rust I will take care of for now, other than that a good buff and wax job will make it look pretty good.

Interior is 50/50, with the important stuff in good shape (all leather seats and dash are good) and the problem areas are fixable with a little time and money: 2 disfunctional power windows, noncentral locking, crappy aftermarket stereo, missing dash trim pieces, saggy sunroof cover headliner, gnarly looking carpets. The bigger challenge will be under the hood: first known problem is a blown head gasket, and also predicting changing the timing chain while I'm in there. AC works good, it already has a few new components like radiator and electric water pump so I felt confident in shelling out $500 for the car.

Once I get it in good running order I plan on some light modding such as new shocks/ springs, new rims (probebly 17s), retint and upgrade the head unit and add a sub. I'll post more pics once I finish my initial cleaning. Unfortunately, right now I don't have much spare cash so it will probebly be a long process of fixing this up. I have nothing but time though....

Thanks!

I've run into a major oil leak (and a minor coolant leak) so it's off the road for a little bit til I figure it out. I'll probebly have to pull the intake manifold (you can see how big it is in the previous pictures).

Here's some pics I took a week or so ago, nothing special, just out for a drive.

I started working on the stereo! I picked up a Kenwood KDC-HD942 CD player from Crutchfield (already installed), a Pioneer amp off eBay and a friend is going to give me a 12" sub in a box. The car came with 2 sets of aftermarket Infinity speakers put in by the previous owner, so far I'm not all that impressed but I'll wait until the whole system is done to see if they'll cut it. When I get it all hooked up I'll take some more pics. :thumb:

Still looking for rims.... :)P

Well the oil leak was the external oil cooler, I pulled that, cleaned it up and reinstalled with 2 new o-rings. The coolant leak was the "crack pipe", a cheap plastic coolant tube that breaks alot. I installed a new aluminum one but broke one of the rubber lines that go from it to the oil cooler so had to replace that too. But it's all together now and leak free. Now I have a (possibly bad) oil pressure sensor to replace, I need to do a little more research into it...

I've been working on the upgrades. I finally ordered some rims online, they are on their way. I installed a new CD player, and I have an amp and just need a subwoofer to finish the sound system off. Pics will be coming when I get more put together. :thumb:

Here's a couple pics, I haven't been working on it much lately but I did get the new rims and tires installed, what a difference it makes in looks! Bumps are kinda harsh with 40-series tires though lol I need to get a wiring kit and I'm ready to do the full stereo install. It still needs a retint of the windows as well as some suspension work (shocks/struts and new inner tie rods and maybe lowering springs). Here's the new rims:

An update to the Jetta:

She blew her coil pack a couple months ago, I found out later it was a cheap no-name brand one. I tried to replace it with another cheap one and it would blow it if I gave her anything more than half throttle. Three coil packs later the company agreed to take back the crappy one and I paid double to get a good German one (the VW ones aren't very good either). Problem solved!

I also did some exhaust work, I think the cat was getting plugged so I had that, the resonator and one of two mufflers deleted. It's throaty but a bit buzzy, I need to get a resonator put back on then add some tips to the (remaining) factory muffler. That will finish my powertrain mods I think, intake to exhaust.

I had some trouble tuning the Kenwood head unit once the amp and sub were installed, it's overly complicated but several phone calls to various service departments finally got it together. I've got a 12" Kicker run by a 300 watt Pioneer amp, it sounds pretty good. I need to bolt the sub and amp down then take some pics. Next up, some suspension work: new inner tie rods, then shocks and struts all around, maybe springs.....

Here's the latest pics. Exhaust is done, new resonator installed, new tips added. They're slightly staggered to follow the contours of the bumper.

I already changed the tie rods, steering feels alot better now. Still have to retint the windows, maybe with the tax returns. And another window regulator went out! VW did a terrible job designing these, I've replaced 3 out of 4.

I've probebly got as much into the car as I can sell it for. It was about $2000 to buy the car and rebuild and upgrade the motor (chip, cams, intake, exhaust), $800 wheels and tires, $700 in stereo upgrades and other parts/ repairs. What I hated was almsot $500 to register it! Still needs shocks and springs, new tint and a few minor fixes and I will be done modding her. I wish I could paint her again too but I probebly won't bother. Fun to drive and only $25 a month for insurance! Slightly better gas mileage than the Escape too.

i think 2000$ to 3000$ is VERY good to get a car that looking good and with engine you know what as been done on it.

It's always good when you can do the most by yourself, That'S money in your pocket...

grats on that one...

Yea Rob, the wonders of Florida never cease: insurance costs less than half a tank of gas now. Thanks for the props guys!

What do you really think? If you like it that much I might have to drive out to Texas and give you a ride! :shades:

I finally got around to changing the shocks and struts in the Jetta, I'm pretty sure they were the factory original ones. They were all bad, I have some KYBs in there now, much better. I also took the liberty of lowering the car. My friend figured out how to cut springs :stop: I know, they say cutting the springs heats the metal, then ruins the temper and takes the "spring" out of the spring. So all we have to do is cut it without heating it, which we do by cutting with a pneumatic grinder while spraying the springs with a water hose. I keep my hand on the coil, it never even gets warm. The front was higher than the rear originally, so I cut more out of the front than the rear. I've got to drive it some, make sure they completely settle to see if it's at the proper ride height (I'm looking for a gap about two fingers tall, it was over 3 when I started). I'll take some pics once I'm happy with the height. And don't worry, I had a computerized alignment done again after I lowered it (lifetime alignment, so I get it done after any suspension or steering work).

Here's a quick snapshot of the Jetta at a gas station, the sun was hitting it just right so you could see the tires and wheel gap very clearly. Looks like it's still a touch high in the back. The car is so low now I can look down on the roof

Gotta get that tint changed though...

And I'm going to get her a paint job next year, too many scuffs and clearcoat thinned out. Same Silver Arrow color I think.
