Hello,

I am researching to but a used Escape for my daughter. Looking to spend around $9K-$12K. Can anyone give any advice to:

What model years are best to look for?
Is there good life left after 100K miles? Looking to only have 4 or 5 years with light driving.
Any major service to watch for like timing belt or water pump?
Overall, how dependable is the Escape?

Thanks!

Joe

They all have there little problems. I would suspect you could get a 2010 in that price range, just depends on if you want awd etc.
With well over 100k miles, at least in my tristate

IMO the RAV is a better built vehicle. Not a fan of Hondas. If it wasn't for my extended warranty, I would have gone broke with this thing.. Now that its sorted out, the escape is not bad. The only downside of the RAV like most Toyotas, they are a very vanilla car.

Yeah, there is something about Toyotas and how boring they are. Ecspecially the RAV4. I had one as a rental and was not even a little impressed.

My '06 has been fine. I bought it with about 108,000 miles or so. Beyond normal maintenece I've had to replace the driver window regulator (I moved it from the driveway to the street one morning, came home after work and the driver window was open. The regulator had failed and the window fell into the door), and replaced the timing cover/oil pan gaskets. That's it.

Regular maintenece has been: oil, brakes (pads/rotors), fluids (rear diff, transmission, coolant, transfercase), tires, wipers, battery, spark plugs, air filter... Stuff like that. My '06 has like 164,000 miles now.

The lower timing chain and oil pan gaskets are known issues on the V6 motor. I had a warranty when I bought it so I replaced it under that. The leak isn't bad- mostly just smelly while waiting in traffic. Mine never leaked enough to really even add oil between oil changes.

V6 gas mileage isn't great on the 4 speed autos (city or highway). The 2nd gen has a 6 speed auto. It does about as bad in the city as the 4 speed but on the highway it does much better.

The AWD system is great. No one really has any issues with it and all love it in the snow. There is a couple MPG penalty for having it, but it's worth it for me.

My '12 has 26,000 miles (bought brand new) and hasn't had anything but oil changes and tire rotations so far.

My niece has my mom's old 2001 Escape, I think that has over 200,000 miles on it. There are many Escape Hybrid taxis out there with over 300,000 miles. A taxi company would not keep them that long if they were costing a lot in maintenance.

You can look at Consumer Reports. They break down used cars based on year and make. They rate as either reliable or not. The RAV4 and CRV are both recommended for the model years you are looking at, the Escape is not. 09 Escape reliability is rated as good, 10 is poor, 11 is good.

My friend has a RAV4. It has been nothing but a pile.

I laugh and compare our purchases. We got my wife an '03 Escape V-6 4X4 with 170k on it.

It was a state vehicle 85% of its life and had Carfax to prove a ton of regular maintenance. Only problem we've had with hers is the factory alt went out and the EGR needed replaced. No more than 8k invested.

My friend has a 2007 RAV4 sport. 4cyl 2WD. Got it with just under 60k as a factory certified vehicle. He's had a coil pack go bad, ABS sensor that disabled the rest of the system, alternator ( 2 actually but I'll give credit for it being a reman ), he's had some electrical issues, phantom trouble codes, etc...I forget everything, but it's left his wife and 2 small children stranded more than once.

He bought the car for just over 10k. Then all the repairs too...
