Towing with a hybrid

Has anyone used a hybrid to tow a small pop up camper ? I want to go less than 50 miles at 55mph and less. The hybrid isn't supposed to tow more than 1000 pounds because of electric energy use when in reverse. Also, the trailer wiring harness for the hybrid is $80 - 100. Why can't a regular wiring harness be spliced into the wires ( like I could do with my 1985 truck ) instead of having the plug connectors in the tail light assembly ? I have a 2008 with 94,000 miles, no backup camera, 4 cyl automatic.

ottowa..... Thanks for the info, I didn't know that about the flashers. Yes that kit looks like the one I saw on line and I will look for the lowest priced one. Thanks !

ottawa.... does your Escape have a backup camera ? Mine does not and one site I found said the wiring harness would NOT work unless the car has a backup camera.

feh2...... I live in central Kentucky and there aren't any mountains close to me. There is one steep hill I would encounter to and from my favorite campground but hopefully it won't be a problem. If I planned to to a lot of traveling to camp and sight-see, I know I would need a different vehicle. My bank account says  to that idea.
