I own a 2012 ford escape and would like to install a rear view camera. Can I buy an oem mirror with auto dimming microphone and an rear view display then run the two wires from the camera to the mirror to use the mirror and camera together like an oem camera?

I hope so as I have the same plan for my 2012 Fusion. I have no real good place for even a 4.3 inch monitor. I thought that the in rear view mirror display was too small but in reality it works okay (I test drove a Fusion with it).

I had hoped to find the rear view mirror in the junk yard but no such luck. You can find them frequently on eBay (many available at all times). I think the biggest trick is getting the correct connector for the mirror, I think they are different, but I might be wrong. I have a couple from some non rear view camera mirrors in case they are the same, and just need to move around wires and add video.

I don't know if you got around to doing the Rear View Mirror Monitor mod....but my dad just did it to my Mom's 2012 Escape.

Her Escape only had the MIC, Auto Dim, and Compass. We were able to pick up a mirror monitor from the junk yard for about $25. The first one we got did not have a Mic...so we had to go back and get another one. On the back of the mirrors is gives an example of what is on the mirror.

We found an OEM rear view cam on ebay and wired it in. Basically, for the cam, you need a power source positive, negative or ground, positive feed voltage...(like from the wire that feeds positive power to the reverse lights when put into gear).

My dad posted an overview on his youtube channel. The overview shows the basic concept of what he did.

It is a small monitor, but my dad says it will be there for now until he finds the proper stock head unit to add rear view monitor to the navigation unit. I will probably do that mod myself.

The two things that are great about it is that after finding the wiring diagram for the Monitor Mirror...it actually was easy to add this to my Mom's Escape. The Mic, Auto Dim, Compass works and now Rear View Monitor.

It can be done similarly with an aftermarket camera because the mirror monitor just needs the feeds.

By the way...our 2012 Escape already worked to switch the mirror monitor on when we put the car into reverse

Hmm, Just a couple days ago I saw an SEL Fusion in the junk yard (I know that an S or SE will never have it, but an SEL might, The junk yard has started listing trim level, so nice), and sure enough, it had the RVD mirror. I don't need the mic, mine is in the headliner.

Here is is with a random dash cam providing the signal, works a treat!

It also works with the OEM (duh) camera, which I also got. $30 in parts, need a long shielded but thin composite video cable, but I will be installing both items and what wiring I can. The rearview mirror should already have a signal/12v when backing up since it disables the auto dimming on the auto dimming models. I am hesitant to remove the mirror on my car, these suckers are hard to remove. I broke the windshield of the junk yard car, I practiced on a couple others and only got one off successfully. BUT I need a new windshield and will simply swap it when they remove it and put in the new windshield. I might also give it a go once they are on their way to replace it. I don't know what correct tool to use, it isn't like all the youtube videos with the clamp on the outside.

Yes please be careful about removing the mirror from it's mount.

it is very good that you tried in while at the JY and figured it was a bit complicated.

My dad figured it out and after two days debating weather or not to try it...he went for it. Actually was not as hard as thought...but he did admit that having a fear of breaking the windshield helped him to be very very careful with it.
