I don't know if you got around to doing the Rear View Mirror Monitor mod....but my dad just did it to my Mom's 2012 Escape.
Her Escape only had the MIC, Auto Dim, and Compass. We were able to pick up a mirror monitor from the junk yard for about $25. The first one we got did not have a Mic...so we had to go back and get another one. On the back of the mirrors is gives an example of what is on the mirror.
We found an OEM rear view cam on ebay and wired it in. Basically, for the cam, you need a power source positive, negative or ground, positive feed voltage...(like from the wire that feeds positive power to the reverse lights when put into gear).
My dad posted an overview on his youtube channel. The overview shows the basic concept of what he did.
It is a small monitor, but my dad says it will be there for now until he finds the proper stock head unit to add rear view monitor to the navigation unit. I will probably do that mod myself.
The two things that are great about it is that after finding the wiring diagram for the Monitor Mirror...it actually was easy to add this to my Mom's Escape. The Mic, Auto Dim, Compass works and now Rear View Monitor.
It can be done similarly with an aftermarket camera because the mirror monitor just needs the feeds.
By the way...our 2012 Escape already worked to switch the mirror monitor on when we put the car into reverse
