diagnosing HVAC issue- Blend Door possible?

Hey all

2008 Escape

Hoping you may be able to point me in the right direction here. My wife told me that the heat AND AC were not working properly in our 2008 Ford Escape (not hybrid..base model). It seems that no matter where the dial is set (Cold/Hot, AC on/off) it blows the same temperature. The temp starts cold and warms up as the engine heats up. It stays a luke warm and doesn't changed despite adjusting the hot/cold dial.

I checked and fluids look good. The "heater coil lines" going in to the firewall are both hot to the touch, so I don't THINK there is a blockage. I do recall a bit ago hearing a clicking sound behind the radio/HVAC area on the center console. It sounded like a cd player trying to read a CD, but it continued despite me turning the power off on the radio and removing CD's so i know it was something else.

the only thing i can think is that it may be the blend door actuator. Since our Escape does not have the dual climate or auto/digital climate control, it is my understanding that we only have one Blend Door, and it happens to be the one behind the dash that is the biggest pain :(

The thing that confuses me is that in what i have read, if it is the blend door, than the MAX AC should still work. In my case, the temperature does not change when i select MAX AC...it stays the same temp as it does on normal setting. I do hear the air "adjust" when i select MAX AC, which i guess is it changing vents??? But it does not get cooler.

Any thoughts? If it is the RH door blend, anyone have any tips or "how to's" when it comes to accessing it? Thanks in advance!!

thanks again Jbone.

Also, i was able to mess around with it a bit more when my wife got home from work. There is a noticable difference in temp when i select MAX AC. It does not seem like it gets as cold as it used to, but it definitely gets a bit cooler when MAX AC is engaged.

so far all signs point towards the blend door actuator, especially now that i have determined that the MAX AC does make a difference. Now i just need to get the courage to remove the airbag which totally freaks me out.

again, any input or advice is MUCH appreciated. Big time noobie here.

Empty out the glove box, and press both sides toward the center. That will allow the box to 'fall out' a bunch more, exposing the hinge attaching screws. If needed, you can remove the screws and the glove box for better access.
Looking under the dash board, you will see the plenum {fancy word for box} that the air goes through for heating and cooling treatment.
There are three 'functions' done by flaps. The first is temperature modulation, which is done by the blend door. It blends ambient air with air that has passed through the evaporator or heater core, raising or lowering the temperature. If you select MAX, a third flap will move to allow it to draw air from the passenger cabin into the top right portion of the plenum, through a rough grate visible with the glove box removed.
The other door is the 'mode' selector. It will direct the plenum output to the windshield, floor outlets, or to the panel louvers, with some 'mixing' of those positions.
Which one is not working? The MAX, or 'recirc' flap seems to be having some effect, so it is between Temp or mode? You have to figure that out based on symptoms before attempting to effect a repair. If you heard a bunch of clicking, it is likely the motor that operates the temperature selector. On older FoMoCo products, the motor 'finds' its position in its range of travel by moving the door to either wide open or full closed, and works from there. That 'function' seems to have broken a lot of pivot arms in older Fords, leading to the need to drop the whole dashboard to replace a $5 plastic flap and its 'axle'. There are several places on the web that offer repair kits for Ford door failures. You may have need of one. Find out what's not moving when you move the controls, and work from there. If you are lucky, it may be the more expensive 'motor' rather than the cheap flap which costs so much to install...

It is definitely the temperature control actuator. The one that sits on the heat box ( i am told). All of the vents work so the "mode" works fine. Same with MAX AC, it works fine as well (not as cold as i remember it, but it does "engage")

The temperature does not change regardless of where i turn the dial (manual cold to hot). It USED to make that clicking sounds, like a hard drive trying to read data, but it does not anymore. Makes no sound at all. I assume that is becuase it is completely dead at this point.

I have removed the glove box no problem. i get a bit freaked out when it comes to removing the passenger airbag but i assume that if i disconnect battery and fuse (wait 10-20min for discharge) i should be ok/safe to remove airbag module. From there, i have heard that once inside the airbag compartment, i can remove a few screws from the duct work to move it out of the way to gain access to the blend door actuator. Sounds alot easier than i am sure it is.
I have already purchased a replacment actuator, it was only like $20. Just have not worked up the courage to really go full into taking the airbag out and trying to replace.
